1952 MG TD Roadster MG TDs have been owned and raced by some big names. JFK and Jackiedrove one on their honeymoon. Marilyn Monroe and Cary Grant droveone in the film Monkey Business. Elvis was photographed drivingone. Ronald Reagan was in the passenger seat in the film TropicZone. James Dean famously owned one and it was also the car ofchoice for road racing in the 1950's and one of the pioneers wassoutheast PA legend, Bob Holbert, who also sold and serviced MG'sin one of the first type shops in the country. For consignment, a 1952 MG TD roadster with a title verified 48,588actual miles and with a long list of upgraded items, new electricalcomponents, and a new top. Our consignor confidently states the carcan go anywhere and proved it with runs to Kentucky and AtlanticCity. ExteriorLooking good in just about any color, this Cream TD is a feast forthe eyes. The front chrome accoutrements are like a royal crownthat cap the front end with a grille surround, headlight and rallylight housing, and the bumper with its bumper guards. TD profilesare special with elongated front fenders that swoop to meet a shortrunning board which then blends with the vertical rise of the reararticulated fender while the door slopes downward on the reversehinge side. Hubcaps center the color keyed wheels, including therear mounted spare which is gated by the pull down luggage rack.Small marker lights mounted like little torpedoes on the fender andis included in the consignor's statement that lighting has beenconverted to LED. The canvas top is new and is in excellentcondition, black in color and containing a plastic rear window andcomes with a new tonneau. The stunning little car is not without afew imperfections including some paint chips around wheel openingsand a seam, cracking paint, cracks and rust on the passenger'srunning board, and some mud repair that could use a redo on. InteriorLiteral wood panels make up the door panels, with a cutout sectionfor storage. The bench seat, split on the bottom to make room forthe transmission hump, is tuck and roll style in red leather ingood condition. An updated 3 spoke wood rimmed steering wheelfronts a new wood dashboard that houses the factory speedometer andtachometer in front of the driver, while an aluminum plate housesvintage dressed Autometer gauges, the ignition, and variousswitches and levers. A few dash plaques are applied to the woodglove box and the MG passenger handle is securely attached. It'sall very clean and tidy and, as noted, capable. A billet shifter isfloor mounted and surrounded by low pile black carpet that shows abit of usage. DrivetrainClean and driver quality conditions are found as we lift the sideengine cover. Here we find the 1250cc inline 4 cylinder power plantrated at 54 horsepower and fueled by a pair of SU carburetors whichhave recently been rebuilt. A 4-speed manual transmission sendspower, in true sports car configuration, to the rear wheels and5.125 gears. Drum brakes are equipped in the front and back. Ourconsignor states alternator, relays, fuses, and gauges are newer;the ignition is by Advance Distributor. UndercarriageGenerally driver quality underneath with some minor surface rust inspots. The single exhaust flows back to a glasspack style muffler,then out beyond the back bumper with a chrome deflector. Someresidual oil on the rear differential, but not an active leak. Coilspring suspension occupies the independent system up front whileleaf springs suspend the back. Drive-AbilityI may never be as cool as Elvis or James Dean, but this car triesits best to make you feel cool, and succeeds! The low door, lowdriving position, and long nose of these MG's really does create anenjoyable ride. This one runs well, handles great, and stops verywell. It's no wonder guys thought this would make a great roadracing car! Everything functions and this car is ready to hit theroad! Hollywood legends aside, MG TDs are historical automobiles and inmany ways, the predecessor to all modern true sportscars. Therewere plenty of coupes racing back in the day and even a fewspiders. But the balanced little TD's were often the gateway carsfor many early hobby and professional racers.
