Whether you're a collectoror simply appreciate classic cars, the 1955 Pontiac Chieftainremains an iconic piece of automotive history. 1955 was a huge yearfor Pontiac. Of course, the big news was the new overhead-valve V-8that replaced the long-serving flathead straight-six andstraight-eights. This "Strato-Streak" engine -Pontiac's second-everV-8- out-muscled its predecessor to the tune of 173 hp/180 hp/200hp (2-bbl. with manual transmission/with Hydra-Matic/4 bbl withHydra-Matic), compared to the 1954 eight-cylinder top rating of 127hp. There's the trademark "Silver Streaks" styling motif, whichwould disappear for the 1957 model year. New were the newwrap-around windshield and wide range of available colors, insideand out. Those Streaks decorated the hoods of an expanded lineup ofChieftain 860, Chieftain 870, and Star Chief models, as well as thestylish, late-introduction Star Chief Custom Safari two-door wagon.Engine: The 1955 Pontiacs introduced the Strato-Streak V-8 engine,which replaced the long-serving flathead straight-six andstraight-eights. This new overhead-valve V-8 produced 173 hp (witha 2-barrel carburetor and manual transmission). Design: The 1955Pontiacs featured two wide "Silver Streaks" running the length ofthe hood, a distinctive design element1. The hood ornament,affectionately known as the "Indian," was made of amber plastic andlit up when the headlights were turned on. This beautiful classichas been meticulously maintained by the present owner. Clean, norust and runs great. This Chieftain is a head-turner. Awesome colorscheme and plenty of original manuals and paperwork with the car.Everything functioning properly except for radio and airconditioning. Gas gauge has to be approximated as well.
