1964 Chevrolet El Camino With a Fuel-Injected 383 V8

Summary:
Used 1964 Chevrolet El Camino 6,935 miles
Location:
Placitas, NM
Description:

In 2018, the seller rescued this 1964 Chevrolet El Camino from his friend’s yard, “where it had been sitting in need of restoration since the late 80s,” he explains. A round of rehabilitation and modifications ensued about five years ago, and the ’64 emerged two years later with an EFI-fed 383-cu.in. stroker small-block, a new A/C system, a trick Turbo-350 transmission, power four-wheel disc brakes, a wheel and tire upgrade, fresh paint and interior in new colors, and a renewed electrical system and suspension. He says, “I have driven it in the local Fourth of July parade every year since it was completed, and I also use the El Camino to run to the store or go out for a hamburger.” POWERTRAIN Factory equipped with a six-cylinder engine, the El Camino’s swapped-in “modified 383-cu.in. OHV V8 has just 6,935 miles on it since the build,” the seller notes. It features an Eagle stroker reciprocating assembly, Summit Racing iron heads, a Lunati cam and roller rockers, a stud girdle, Weiand aluminum intake manifold, a Holley Sniper EFI system with an in-tank fuel pump, an HEI distributor, headers, and dual exhaust. “Thanks to the EFI system, the car has no cold-start or idle issues,” he says. “Turn the key on and allow the fuel pump to cycle before starting. That's all it requires. The engine and transmission pans and the differential cover show signs of weeps,” he adds. The TCI Turbo Hydra-Matic 350 three-speed automatic transmission was purchased and installed 6,935 miles ago, and “it shifts well with no noises,” he says. In the stock rear axle, the bearings and seals were replaced, but the gear ratio isn’t known. EXTERIOR Per the seller, “about five years ago, the quarter panels, the entire floorpan, and the rear panel under the back glass were replaced,” and the El Camino was repainted yellow with Summit paint. (The original color was code-936 Ermine White.) “It has never been color sanded or buffed, but the overall quality of the finish is still good,” he reports. “There are no scratches, but there are two chips on the car,” and a bubble in the cowl vent paint.“The windshield, rear glass, and passenger’s side vent window are new and in good condition,” he says. “The driver’s door glass and vent glass and passenger’s side door glass are original with minor scratches.” New door seals were installed, they don’t leak, and the lighting “functions properly.” INTERIOR Originally fitted with a code-794 medium red bench seat interior, it has since been changed to black and new vinyl bucket seats from Summit were installed. “The driver’s side shows slight wear, but there are no cracks or tears, and all the adjustments work,” the seller says. Both the carpet and headliner are “in good condition,” but the former “is unfinished behind the seats, and the latter “does have a few wrinkles,” he adds. The trim is intact, and the reproduction instrument cluster, aftermarket A/C, heater, and lighting operate as designed, as does “the 1960s radio that was updated for iPod” capability. The seller reports the speedometer "is about 10 mph off." An aftermarket steering wheel and shifter were installed as well. CHASSIS Back when the other restoration work was done, the body bushings, and those in the front and rear suspension were replaced, and new shocks were installed, according to the seller. All remain “in good condition.” A four-wheel disc brake upgrade from The Right Stuff was performed, and “the brakes are very sensitive and will lock the wheels,” he notes.Only the front driver’s side 15-inch steel Rally wheel has “a little curb rash, and there is a slight vibration at about 60 mph.” The tires “are in good shape and were replaced.” The DOT date code on one of them appears to be 2016. “The car drives straight down the road and doesn't have any more play than normal in the power steering, but it does have has a very slight weep in the system.” DOCUMENTATION The seller states that this vehicle will be sold on a clean New Mexico title in his name. Receipts are included, and the work on the car was documented on the seller’s YouTube channel, “Kens Hobby.” This 1964 Chevrolet El Camino has been bestowed with mechanical upgrades to improve its performance, drivability, comfort, braking, and appearance, making it a great choice for a buyer who wants cruiser that can even haul cargo if desired.
