1977 Lincoln Mark V Hardtop Your first impression when you approach this 1977 Lincoln TownCoupe is that it's simply mammoth. On a 127-inch wheelbase, itrivals the biggest cars of the '50s, and today anything with 127inches between the wheels is a full-sized dually pickup. In fact,this car is more than 18 inches longer than a new LincolnNavigator! But it isn't merely big for the sake of being big, ithas style and proportion and a gothic look that has aged prettywell. These cars have enjoyed a nice uptick in values ever sincethe guys in the Scorsese flick "Casino" were motoring around insuch things, and in 1978, if you owned one of these, you had welland truly made it to the top. (Not mentioning how you actually gotthere!) For consignment, and taking up significant real estate in theClassic Auto Mall, is this 1977 Lincoln Continental Mark V. Thiscar is among the last of the no-holds-barred, full-size luxurycars, representing the pinnacle of American motoring at the time.Distinguished by its sharp-edged exterior design, design themes ofthe Mark V would be adapted onto Lincoln vehicles throughout the1980s. This particular car is one of 68 built that are white and afully white vinyl top and a gold Romano velour interior. Dualwhitewall tires with some turbine wheels add to the allure. ExteriorAt 230 inches long this Mark V is the largest two-door coupe eversold by Ford Motor Company, with the 233-inch long two-door andfour-door Lincoln Continental sedans, (produced alongside it), asthe only longer vehicle ever marketed by Ford. So Captain, (sic),long straight rust-free steel panels, with well minded gaps, areall bathed in white paint. This paint is really nice and definitelyretains its shine. Hidden headlights, a big chromed radiatorsurrounding, cathedral lights flanking on all 4 corners, and somechrome trimmings running the length of this car several times, it'slooking very proud. Bumpers show in excellent condition, and arewonderfully shiny. Other trimmings and badging are all in goodcondition. On top of the passenger compartment is a white vinyl topwhich is nice and clean with no faults. There is an oval B pillaropera window. Square and rectangle design chop nice sections intothis car's design, and bottoming off this monster is a set of goldturbine style wheels with a large chromed nut -like hub in thecenters complete with the Continental star within a blackbackground inside the nut. Dual stripe whitewall tires are justlike they were in the showroom in 1977. InteriorA swing of the doors and we have padded vinyl in gold for theuppers and mid sections of the armrest. A center padded wovenpattern gold and tan broadcloth is the background for the doorpull. Wood applique burl panels which house some of the manyconvenience options available at the driver's fingertips. Goldcarpet is on the bottoms and courtesy lighting makes sure you donot get out and place a Bruno Magli into a surprise puddle. Richgold velour covers a split bench front seat setup and talk aboutpadding aplenty, you will not go without on these seats. Severalpadded "pillow" sections are presented with some woven gold and tanpattern broadcloth inserts and snazzy smooth velour bolsters. A bigfold down central armrest is noted, and the rear bench also doesnot have us wanting for more luxury, matching the front seating.All seats have slight aging but show really well. For the dash ismore feathered wood grained applique with squared off white facedgauges, chromed slider levers, and lots-o-warning lights. Anoriginal steering wheel with more wood applique is in front and hascruise control buttons. Gold carpet floods the floors, and has narya spot or stain, no tears or areas of overwhelming wear. Up highthe headliner is nice and tight and all gold. It is truly all thatglitters. DrivetrainWith wires and hoses aplenty along with some blue painting for theengine block and valve covers plus the air cleaner, we note a 460ciV8 insertion. 4-barrels of carburetor are atop, and a C6 3-speedautomatic transmission is on back with a Ford 9-inch 2.50 rear axleturning the tires. All is finely detailed in this spit shinedblingy engine bay. UndercarriageAs the photos show, the undercarriage has some light road dirt andpatina peeking out from the black undercoating paint. The framingis solid as are these peppered floor pans and rockers. Power discbrakes are in front and power rums for the back. The car rides onfront independent coil springs and a rear 4 link with coil sprungsuspension. Drive-AbilityA quick starter, and smooth runner, this car provides a beautifulride, and good handling, as well as bias free panic stopping. Allconveniences were in working order, and the seats were like sittingin my home favorite recliner. Hand me the remote! Our consignor states that he just loves this car and hates to partways with it, however time marches forward and interests change.But now you have a pristine example of living large in Mid 1970'sstyle and color and a rare color combo. Based on this car and myinteraction with it, I agree with him.
