In 1991, NorthAmerican production began in Fremont, California (the VIN on thesetrucks starts with '4T'), however some trucks sold in the UnitedStates during the 1991-1995 model years were still manufactured inJapan (VIN starts with 'JT'). The Hilux received a minor faceliftin 1991 (for the 1992 model year), which was a minor grille changeand the new Toyota emblem that had been recently adopted. Duringits production years, it was available in both manual andautomatic, with a range of engines for the US market including thecarbureted 2.4 I4 (22R), the fuel-injected 2.4L I4 (22R-E), and the3.0L V6 (3VZ-E). The Hilux range included a couple of dieselvariants, the 2.4L Turbodiesel I4 (2L-TE) and the 2.8L I4 (3L). Forthe 1996 model year, Toyota discontinued the Hilux platform in theUnited States, replacing it with the new Tacoma.
