The original MX-5, with a standard manual transmission, came with a1.6 L DOHC inline four-cylinder engine, producing 115hp at 6,500rpm, and 100lb of torque at 5,500 rpm. The engine employs anelectronic fuel injection system using a vane-type air flow meterand an electronic ignition system with a camshaft angle sensorinstead of a distributor. This engine was specifically designed forthe MX-5 and featured a lightened crankshaft, flywheel, andaluminum sump with cooling fins. An MX-5 with the optionalautomatic transmission had its 1.6L engine tuned to develop peaktorque at lower rpm's to better mate with the automatictransmission gearing and torque requirements.
