After all, we live in a throw away age so something out of the ordinary had to occur for these cars to survive into a new century. This particular classic takes us from out of the ordinary and into the realm of a true love story. Decades ago a loving husband purchased this Torino as an anniversary gift for his dear wife. Over the years they both enjoyed her immensely and drove her sparingly. As a trophy to their happy life the pair took great car of their GT and even though its condition was always well looked after, in 1989 they decided to treat her to a most careful restoration. She was stripped down to the bare metal and TWELVE coats of the original Candy Apple Red lacquer were applied followed by FIVE coats of clear urethane. Any chrome , interior bits or mechanical pieces needing sorting were tended to at that time. The white striping, which is how the car original came, was removed and instead of reapplying a decal, painted onto the car. The original 302 V8 engine itself received a first class detail and painting and to this very day the motor looks pristine. Yes, I said pristine. The Torino’s 3 speed automatic transmission shifts as smoothly as 1968. Every needed maintenance item was tended to before it was required and we have the meticulous records to prove its ultimate level of care. The red interior looks like day one and the 4 pod instrument dashboard set up tells you all is well with your Torino. The radio pulls in the stations as she should and the original dealer installed a/c blows warm air through the cabin. It may need just a Freon charge but we can’t guarantee that will remedy the nonfunctioning condition. Still, the set up looks cool anyway. The original seat covers were saved along with many other replaced bits. And when I say extra saved bits, we are talking right down to original headlights. The car was treated to the full Ziebart rust proofing and regular maintenance when new. That is a good thing because these Torinos have a history of rusting early on into their brief life cycles. If you have ever wondered why they are relatively rare to this day, it’s down to that. Many of the top market GT’s fell victim to the 70’s tin worm but not this cherished one. The level of car this car has enjoyed is reserved for only the rarest of occasions. This car’s condition is nothing short of remarkable. The restoration looks like it was done the day before yesterday and only a few miles were travelled since completion. The 5,000 miles covered included no rain, fog, night time bugs or extended time under punishing sun. It is an excellent piece in almost every respect. Documentation tells the true story and there we have that covered in spades. Two Build Sheets are here plus the Ford production card. Hand written diaries covering decades of all maintenance and restoration done on the GT. A pictorial catalogue of the restoration process. Magazine articles, advertisements and national club newsletters from decades past along with a shelf full of trophies, the long term owner is just keeping one, will also travel with our Ford. The surviving spouse of our caring couple has delivered this rare gem to us for of course fair compensation plus this one hope ……….. That this GT would find as loving of a home as the one she has now left……….
