Restore, or Fix and Enjoy: 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray...

Summary:
Used 1963 Chevrolet Corvette 427
Location:
West Point, VA
Description:

A first-year example of the iconic C2 generation, this 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray Convertible was an inheritance from the seller’s late father. It is an early build car and has the storage wells behind the seats that were eliminated midway through the year’s production. It was refurbished in the Nineties, according to the seller, including paint, upholstery, and more, but that work is showing its age. It comes with the factory hardtop, wears reproduction knock-off wheels and its 327 engine reportedly runs well, but there are a number of cosmetic and additional service needs. “The car looks great and is a head-turner, but there are plenty of mechanical projects,” says the seller, who adds the car is a suitable drivable project or resto-mod candidate. POWERTRAIN Under the hood of this shark-nose C2 is a 327-cu.in. OHV V8 paired with a four-speed manual transmission. The engine’s originality is unconfirmed, but its block casting number, 3782870, is correct for 1963. The stamping on the front-passenger side is F0529R. It is believed to be the 340-horsepower engine. Fed by a Carter AFB carburetor, it is said to run well, with no reported smoke, but the seller notes the gas pedal must be feathered for a few minutes on cold starts to prevent stalling. The transmission is said to shift well with the help of an older Hurst shifter, sending power to what is believed to be a 4.11-geared rear axle. Know leaks include an engine oil leak and a leak from the rear differential. EXTERIOR The “936A” code on the trim tag indicates this Corvette was originally painted Ermine White, but the seller notes it was repainted a Honda red color in the mid-Nineties. The paintwork is said to be in good shape, with “no major blemishes.” The seller also says there are no cracks in the fiberglass body. The original hardtop is included, but the seller says it needs restoration. “The paint, seals, and gaskets are in poor condition” he says. Additionally, the soft top was reportedly replaced in the Nineties, but shows wear. The plastic rear window is hazy and yellowed. The top opens and closes, but there’s a closure pin missing on the passenger’s side. The bumpers were re-chromed in the Nineties, says the seller, and remain in good shape, but there’s a dent on one of the hood grilles. There’s also an interference issue with the hood and the aftermarket air cleaner beneath it. It prevents the hood from latching properly. Other body-related issues of note include slight sagging with both doors, which prevents them from latching properly. “The driver’s door will close fully, but the passenger’s door will not,” says the seller. The windshield is cracked and the seals and moldings need to be replaced. The headlights are said to work, including the electric actuation of their flip-up doors, but the turn signals do not function. INTERIOR This Corvette came from the factory with a red interior, and it was reportedly professionally restored in the Nineties with replacement vinyl seat covers, replacement carpet and padding, replacement dash pads, door panels, and more. All appear in good shape, with minor apparent wear. The steering wheel shows more significant wear, with paint worn off the rim. The seller also reports there a large chip and a few small cracks in the glove box door. All the gauges are said to work normally, except the tachometer, while the clock works but runs a little fast. The heater does not work and neither does the AM/FM radio. The speaker grille on top of the dashboard shows cracks. CHASSIS According to the seller, there are varying degrees of corrosion on this Corvette’s chassis, including some significant rust behind the driver’s door area and ahead of the rear-axle kick-over section. It’s a common area of rust and will likely need repair, says the seller. The rest of the chassis, steering, and suspension systems likely need service. There is significant play in the steering system, notes the seller, and the suspension and shock bushings are cracked. The four-wheel drum brakes reportedly have been inspected and are said to be in working order. The car rolls on reproduction knock-off wheels shod with Delta Vista radial tires. The wheels appear weathered but are said to be in good shape. The tires, however, are 35 years old, according to the seller, and should be replaced. DOCUMENTATION The seller states that this vehicle will be sold on a clean Virginia title in his name. Additional documentation for this 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray Convertible includes photos of various powertrain casting numbers. There are a number of cosmetic and mechanical projects to perform on this C2, including a few that should be addressed prior to highway driving, but it’s a first-year Sting Ray convertible—an automotive icon, even if it needs a little work.
