This 1985 Mercedes-Benz 300CD Coupe was acquired by the seller in 2021, but he’s now selling because he “has another Mercedes.” He reports buying it online from a seller in Chicago. The car, reported as “freshly detailed outside and inside,” presents well in the provided photos. The seller indicates that he has been using the Mercedes only for local drives and cruise events, and that he keeps it garaged and covered when not in use.Part of the German automaker’s renowned W123 model series, the Mercedes-Benz 300CD was an attractive but semi-odd duck in the U.S. market. It was odd in the sense that it was supposed to be a sporty luxury coupe, but the normally aspirated diesel engine in the 1978-’80 version made it a dog on the road. That changed for the better with the 300CD Turbodiesel model, introduced for 1981. The inline-five engine offered just a bit less horsepower but more torque than the six-cylinder gas engine available, yet the diesel could achieve high 20s to 30 mpg fuel economy versus 17-20 mpg for the gas model. Based on a shorter-wheelbase version of the robust 123-series sedan platform, the coupe was a true hardtop, with no B-pillar. POWERTRAIN The OM617 3.0-liter turbodiesel SOHC inline-five was factory rated at 123 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. The seller says that the engine is original, and that it starts well with no apparent smoke seen. An included video shows the car revving its engine while parked, with no visible smoke. The seller affirms there are no leaks or weeps, and the photos show a clean engine compartment. He says the four-speed automatic transmission operates as designed. EXTERIOR The exterior color appears to be Desert Red Metallic. The seller states that the 300CD’s paint is “good for a car of this age.” He says there are some minor blemishes, a couple of which can be seen in the close-up photos. He says the sunroof has been serviced with new bushings and that it functions properly and does not leak. All glass and windows are in good shape, and the vehicle has no leaks elsewhere, he states. There is “no rust,” and the sunroof channels were cleaned out, per the seller. The lighting works as intended. INTERIOR According to the owner, the car’s carpeting appears to be in very nice condition, especially after the interior detailing was done. The seller states that most interior trim remains intact, but the driver’s-side lighted vanity mirror is missing. The wood trim shows some marks that would not be unexpected for the car’s nearly 45-year age. The center console appears to be a darker wood than the upper console and dash, and it shows a crack to the left of the shift lever. The seller says the beige MB-Tex covered seats “are in good shape, with no major rips or tears.” The driver’s seat adjuster appears damaged in the provided photos. He reports that the headliner is “fine.” The heat is affirmed to work, but the A/C does not. The vehicle’s gauges work, but not the clock. The aftermarket Pioneer stereo has a CD player, though the seller did not report on its operability. He says the power windows work, but he is unsure if the vacuum-actuated central locking is working because he has not attempted to use it.
