1950 Rolls-Royce Touring Saloon

Price:
$48,800
Summary:
Used 1950
Location:
Temecula, CA
Description:

We are pleased to offer a fabulous James Young bodied touring saloon with many original features. This Silver Wraith was ordered as the Earls Court Show car and is a beautiful example of custom coachbuilding. It has been sitting for nearly all of the past 44 years. The car has had a recent cosmetic restoration and had been stored since at least 1970. Most apparent are the "new" set of Dunlap Forte tires that were installed in about 1967. They still ride beautifully, have full tread left but are well aged cracked! She runs and drives well, strong oil pressure, and the engine runs cool and and is very quiet! History of WHD 94 Chassis number WHD 94 was ordered by Jack Barclay, Ltd as its Earls Court Show car. Sir James Farmer of Norton Co. Ltd. acquired the car on December 22, 1950. Sir James Farmer retained ownership of the Rolls Royce until it was sold to Lady F. Stamp at 7 Hyde Park Street in London on January 9, 1953. The motorcar was then sold to F. L. Goddard who enjoyed it for the next twelve years. We have photos of the Rolls in England that date back to the 1960's. WHD 94 was then acquired by Mr. John T. Gregory of Houston, Texas on September 7, 1967. Mr. Gregory had a large collection of motorcars in the Houston area and imported the car into the US upon acquisition. The Rolls received its last MOT certificate on December 28, 1966. Remaining on the windscreen is a Texas DMV registration inspection from 1970. All documentation shows thatthis Rolls has had few miles added since 1967. On December 8th 2001, a long time collector ofmotorcars,Mr. Harold Roy from Ladoga, Indiana, purchased the car from Mr. Gregory. The Rolls had essentially been untouched from when it was imported into the US in 1967. Over the next decade Mr. Roy proceeded to strip the original paint down to bare metal and repainted it in its original Dark Green lacquer. The Rolls looks stunning in that deep rich color. Appearing almost black except in light, it is a very elegant and rare color. The bodywork and paint are not to high standards but appear quite nice. We have many photos of the Rolls Royce as it was being cosmetically restored. Mr. Roy also commenced a complete replacement of the original light cream leather interior and Wilton wool carpeting. Mr. Roy used all the correct materials and the interior looks very nice. The wood is in very presentable condition and has gorgeous wood grain as would be expected from James Young. From what we were told, the car remained as part oftwo large collections for the subsequent forty three years. This motorcar has a well documented history and is a rare and desirable body style. We have completed detailing the engine compartment, completing a major service, tune-up, cleaning and lining the fuel tank and preparing it for display. We participated on September 11, 2011 in the Corona Del Mar Motor Classic where is was a crowd pleaser due to its wonderful patina. This is a great opportunity to acquire an affordable restored example of Post-War custom coachwork at its finest.
