The 250 Ferrari was the first volume produced model.Enzo Ferrari seen it as vitally important to the company's futurestability. It started with the 250 Europa, built from 1953 to 1954,with an amount fewer than 20. The 250 Europa's introductionheralded a significant change in Ferrari's preferred coachbuilder;previously Vignale had been the most popular. Needing seriesproduction to stabilize Enzo Ferrari's company finances, he askedCarrozeria PininFarina to design a simple and classic 250GT coupe.Pinin built a plant in Grugliasco to expand the production andproduced the new 250 GT coupe PininFarina. This coupe wasintroduced at the Milan Show in 1958 and 335 near identicalexamples were built by 1960. . Offered here by Euro PrestigeImports is a 250GT Series 1 Coupe number 1471GT - arguably one ofthe most exciting examples of the model, both in terms of prominentownership, show-car status and factory options. 1471GT started lifein May of 1959, when its bare chassis was sent to the Torinofacility of Carrozzeria Pinin Farina, to be clothed in theirelegant Coupe coachwork. The seventh to last of the first series128D chassis, 1471GT was factory equipped with four wheel discbrakes, and the offset-lever four-speed overdrive transmission. Thecraftsmen at Pinin Farina spent most of the summer building thecoachwork for the new Ferrari, finishing it in an elegant two-tonelivery of Grigio Argento on the top, and a Bianco lower half. Abeautifully contrasting red was chosen for the interior. . 1471GTwas completed in October of 1959, and soon thereafter delivered tothe official Ferrari importer and agency of Sweden, Tore Bjurstrom.Mr. Bjurstrom had big plans for the new Ferrari, and soon aftertaking delivery transported 1471GT to Germany for display at the1959 International German Auto Show - IAA in Frankfurt. After theshow, 1471GT returned to Sweden, where HRH Prince Bertil, theFerrari's first owner, took delivery in late 1959. The Duke ofHalland, Prince Bertil Gustaf Oskar Carl Eugen was 47 years oldwhen he took delivery of his new Pinin Farina Coupe. A popularpublic figure in Scandinavia and throughout Europe, Bertil had agreat passion for motorcars, and would own several Ferraris duringhis lifetime. . In 1961, 1471GT was sold on to Langdon 'Bill'Proctor, an American playboy residing in Switzerland. Mr. Proctorwas known to rub shoulders with the Swiss elite, and surely feltright at home when arriving at exotic destinations in the silverand white Ferrari. 1471GT was registered on Swiss canton Vaudlicense plate VD 106426, and used often as daily transport byProcter.
