Description:

1961 Studebaker Champ Pickup The 1961 Studebaker Champ had the grille of a Lark, the bed of apickup, and dim prospects for a long-term future. The Champ waspart of a Studebaker truck design generation introduced for 1960.Studebaker truck styling hadn't changed in more than a decade andsales were slipping. The answer, designers decided, was to graftthe front end from Studebaker's new for 1959 Lark compact car ontoa truck chassis with a regular pickup bed. For consignment, a 1961 Studebaker Champ pickup which is in thethroes of a restoration, and upon looking at this truck it is nearthe finish line. It is one of only 5,500 made for this year andtotal production only lasted through 1964. Now our consignor needssomeone to take it over and finish it off and add your own personaltouches. ExteriorApache Red adorns the steel panels which have nicely minded gapsand no rust. The front grille is a 1959 Lark but with wider ribsand it is chromed. A single round headlight resides on either frontcorner and is hovered over by an eyebrow fender which has a thinchrome trim on its edge. Next to these lights are the signal lightsalso in ribbed and bezeled casings doubling as airflow intakes. Ashiny bumper is below and on top the fog lights are neweraftermarket versions. A wrap around glass for the front and slidingstyle glass for the back view of the bed. The fender edge trimmingends at the doors where the only highlighting is the handles. Along stem mirror hangs off of either side. The roofline is lookingnice and level and the glass is all in good condition. For theflare sided bed, a longer 8 foot bed makes this truck a 1/2 tonversion. On the sides of the bed are some curved fashioned rearfenders that appear to have been just slapped on as anafterthought, but these are in good condition with just some smallscratching on the edges. The bed is painted red and is texturedsteel most likely from some previously underlying surface rust asit is not textured paint. On the back is the Studebaker badgedtailgate and this is highlighted in white lettering. Vertical taillights are on either edge of the backs of the bed sides. A shinybumper is below and dual exhausts peek out from the bottom.Stuebaker badged hubcaps are covering red painted steel wheelswrapped in thin whites. InteriorA swing of the doors and we see some nice gray upper and blacklower vinyl panels with an armrest, crank for window and actuator.Studebaker has been embroidered in the gray panel and this is usingred threads. On the tops of the doors where they meet the wraparound glass there is some rub off of the paint. Seats are from amore modern vehicle and are also gray broadcloth and areoverstuffed. These are a little dirty and the broadcloth is a bitsoiled. There is an armrest in the center and in front we see thefactory steering wheel in good shape, and behind this is a blackrolled over steel dash top with a red dash front. It is theoriginal design and has the original oval aluminum bezeled andpunched pattern background and two round instruments. One thespeedo and the other a multi gauge on the edge version. A fewaftermarket gauges are to the instrument's left as well as a toggleand a button. In the center is a glovebox and a panel with CHAMPbadging in gold grandmother's handwriting. In front of thepassenger we see another elongated oval with more punched grid andwhat appears to be a speaker in its center. There is some graycarpeting under the seats but for the floors and toe kicks it'sjust bare steel. Above is a gray broadcloth headliner with stitchededges and 2 matching gray visors. DrivetrainUnder the hood is a 289ci V8 from the factory. It has a single4-barrel carburetor, and a 3-speed manual transmission withoverdrive shifted from the tree. On the back is a Dana 44 rearaxle. The engine and bay are all very clean with the block beingpainted sky blue ,valve coverings in black with "Sweepstakes 289"emblazoned in a red sticker atop these. Also an open chromed aircleaner covering is on the very top. New wiring abounds. UndercarriageBelow is a nice black paint and undercoat chassis and frame. Norust and very clean in its presentation. Dual exhaust with glasspack style mufflers, good body hangers, and no real apparent dripsor leaks. Disc brakes are in front and drums for the back. Leafspring suspension is on all 4 corners. Drive-AbilityThe engine instantly came to life and off to the test track whereit was a nice driver. Good handling and acceleration, and smoothsteering and shifting. I noticed the brake pedal was a bit soft, but when the truck came to a stop it just took longer. Nearly complete as this writer sees it it really only needs somebetter seats maybe and the flooring fitted in the cab. All else isfinished. And the price is right for this piece of Studebakerhistory. Go ahead and purchase it on a Lark!
