Circuit racing at places likeLeMans or Sebring, Rallye Racing in locations like Monte Carlo, orenjoyed by everyday blokes in places like London, the Austin Healey3000 enjoyed a storied history in the early days, as well as now.It's another British Roadster which seemed to have a face - asmiling one at that, which all sorts of car enthusiasts recognize.To those who are very familiar with the Healey 3000 cars, the MarkIII BJ8 like the car you see here, is a desirable variant, whichoffered a pair of SU carburetors, an upgraded dashboard with woodtrim, and slightly different exterior lighting from that of theMark II. The BJ8, known by some as the Big Healey, was active andsuccessful in circuit racing and rallying, and this car certainlygives a nod to racing Healeys of the past. This particular car isfinished in a striking two tone red and black exterior, with ablack interior, capped with a black soft top. When looking at thiscar it's immediately evident that it was restored in aRallye-style, as evidenced by the vented front wings, deletion ofthe bumpers front and rear, the addition of leather hood straps,extra lights that have been added to the front of the car, and theaddition of larger tail lights. All that's missing is a gumballwith a number, and a fancy Rallye decal. This car is clearly theresult of a careful restoration, as the paint and body work aretidy. Rich red, and deep black paint evenly cover the carefullyaligned body panels, and give a nod to the two tone Austin Healeycompetition cars of days past. As a Mark III model, this carfeatures the updated dashboard, which features wood trim. Smithsgauges that have black faces and white digits keep track of enginevitals, shiny panels of toggle switches control functions like theoverdrive, wipers, and lighting, and motoring club and rallyeplaques are mounted on the dashboard. The interior has been wellkept since restoration from the carpet to the seats and dash trim,though some of the wood veneer is showing a bit of age. Known to bestrong engines, the mill under the hood of the 3000 cars is a2912cc inline 6 cylinder. In the MKIII cars like this, they producea good amount of grunt, to the tune of approximately 148horsepower. Plenty of power for spirited driving, or a cruisearound town. This particular car, in keeping with the rallye theme,has a larger aluminum radiator, and three Weber carburetors toreplace the factory original pair of SU carbs. The exhaust exitsfrom a pair of exhaust tips just aft of the driver's side doorrather than the usual spot at the driver's side rear of the car.Literature and records also come with the purchase of the car. As aBritish Marque with such a storied history, the Austin Healey is acar that is immediately noticeable - not just for the seeminglymischievous grin which is part of the styling, but for the classic,flowing lines, wire wheels, delicate chrome trim, and the raspysounding inline 6. The big Healeys are gorgeous cars, and this oneis no exception. Styled as many of the racing Healeys of the '60'swere, this car is a beautiful example that the next owner can beproud of.
