Since the company was truly forged from the fires of competition,the Shelby executive team had a flash of inspiration in 2001. Theyenvisioned a new racing series built around the CSX4000-seriesShelby Cobras, built at Shelby's Las Vegas facility. These specracers would be identically prepared and raced by an all-star listof veteran drivers, including Mario Andretti, Al Unser, BobBondurant, and more. The Shelby Cobras would be owned byindividuals who would pay for the cars upfront and take deliveryafter the racing season, possessing Shelby Cobras withfresh-from-the-track racing provenance and also perfectly preppedfor SCCA competition. The Shelby Cobra Challenge Senior Racing Series was announced as asupport series for CART, scheduled to kick off for the 2002 season.Sometimes, however, even great ideas can't catch a break. As thingsturned out, the series never took the green flag. But a handful ofthese special Shelby Cobras were built. CSX4257 is one of thoseamazing Shelby Challenge Cobras. Dressed in black and sporting the number 99, Hillbank purchased thecar from the original owner. The new owner of this Shelby Cobrawill find many opportunities for inspiration thanks to the NASCAR358ci road racing V8 engine by Roush Yates under the hood.
