1967 Mercury Monterey The Mercury Monterey is a series of full sized cars that weremanufactured by the Mercury division of Ford from 1952 to 1974.Deriving its name from Monterey Bay, the Mercury Monterey served asa replacement for the Mercury Eight, the debut model line of theMercury Division. During its production the Monterey would beoffered in multiple body styles, ranging from coupes, convertible,station wagons, sedans, and hardtops. Following the 1974 modelyear, Mercury discontinued the Monterey nameplate, consolidatingits full size line down to the Marquis and Colony Park stationwagon. This 1968 Mercury 4-door hardtop allows you to experience thesuburban side of life that was the mid to late 1960's in Anytown,USA. Seemingly pulled from storage and given a once over, this carcan serve as a great father/son project or even an affordableproject car for someone who wants to learn the ropes wrenching on aclassic. ExteriorLime Metallic, in worn condition showing chips, dings, nicks andsome rust but retains some of its original shine, is the paintcolor for the lower body of this Monterey. A white painted top ison and shines well but does have some rust staining, particularlytoward the rear of the roof. The chrome bumpers are nice andstraight but suffer from some tarnish and staining. All brightwork,correct badging, and exterior lighting are in good condition. Gapsare a bit funky at places but overall, within acceptable tolerancesjust not perfect alignment. A sizable dent is noted just in frontof the fuel filler door and invasive rust is starting both fore andaft of each rear wheel. Elongated diamond shaped vertical taillighting, which is iconic to this car, is seen on the back andintegrates with the rear bumper. Turbine style wheel covers with acentral Mercury badge are on all 4 corners and are wrapped in thinwhitewall bias ply tires.InteriorA swing of any of the well-balanced doors reveal parchment vinylpanels with eye catching embossments and a nice faux mesh insert.Each panel has varying degrees of wear and soiling but no tears.The original cut and sewn faded black carpet flood the floors andis protected by a black rubber mat. The bench seat up front showssmooth parchment vinyl boosters and nice cloth inserts, and therear bench follows suit. All seating areas show soiling and waterstaining, particularly in the cloth insert areas. The black andchrome ribbed dash is in nice condition and houses all theessentials. An aftermarket AM/FM/Cassette stereo has been added anda crack free black padded topper completes the dash. Even in thetrunk all is factory appearing with minimal rust. DrivetrainBright blue valve coverings and an air cleaner assembly grace the390ci V8 with a 2bbl carburetor is perched on top. This enginerests within an unrestored patina riddled engine bay. Bolted to theback is a C6 3-speed automatic transmission and putting the powerto the ground is a Ford 9" rear axle weighing in with a 2.75ratio. UndercarriageSome surface rust coats the undercarriage, but it remainsstructurally sound and invasive rust free. A trailer hitch andwiring have been added to the back of the frame for all yourhauling needs. Independent coil springs for the front and a 4 linkwith coil springs for the back along with power drum brakes on all4 corners can be seen underneath. A single exhaust system with astock style muffler is in charge of expelling spent fumes and showswith surface rust throughout. Drive-AbilityShe fired right up and idled well. The first thing we always checkbefore heading to the test track are the brakes. In this case, thepedal went to the floor. Our consignor has an appointment scheduledfor next week to have the brake system repaired. More informationwill be provided upon return. Overall this car presents honestly and is mostly original. The1960's were not all 2 door muscle cars and back door experimentsfrom the Big 3. The average neighborhood had its share of 4 doorhaulers and grocery getters so it's nice to see one still around.With some spit shining and polishing you can have a cruiser to beproud of without breaking the bank.
