Alfa Romeo received a tremendous honor in late 1966 when it wasselected to create a conceptual exhibit of man's aspiration for theautomobile at the 1967 International and Universal Exposition, heldin Montreal. Alfa assigned coachwork duties to Bertone, and theproject was spearheaded by Marcelo Gandini, the young designer whohad leapt to the forefront of the automotive imagination with theLamborghini Miura. Two identical prototypes were prepared for theexhibition, and Gandini did not disappoint. Channeling many of thesame cues that made the Miura so innovative, the new Alfa was wideand low with a shark-like nose extending through a curved fenderand shoulder haunches into a truncated tail. The headlight "blinds"and stacked horizontal vents on the C-pillar were attractive, aswell as futuristic in concept. Strong customer interest promptedAlfa to develop a production version, which continued to be basedon the respected 105 Series chassis, as with the Expo show cars. Anew direction was taken for the model's engine, however. Discardingthe 105's standard twin-cam inline-four, Alfa's engineers installeda modified version of the competition-pedigreed V-8 from the Tipo33 Stradale prototype race car. Featuring aluminum alloyconstruction, dual overhead-cam actuation, and a dry-sumplubrication system, the advanced racing engine provided the newproduction model with nearly unprecedented power for an Alfa roadcar. Just 3,925 examples of the appropriately named Montreal werebuilt between 1971 and 1975. It is estimated that as many as 100examples had made their way to American shores as recently as a fewyears ago. The landmark design on the resume of the great MarceloGandini features one of Alfa Romeo's most legendary motors, and theMontreal has arguably grown to be Milan's most iconic road car ofthe 1970s. According to its Certificato di Origine, this gorgeous1971 Alfa Romeo Montreal was built on July 29, 1971, and destinedfor the Italian market. Imported to the US in 2018, the car is arecent Alfa Romeo Owners Club Concours award winner and is offeredwith its tool kit, certificate of origin, RIAR HomologationCertificate, papers, and literature. Finished in its original colorcombination ofRosso over Nero interior, it is very well-presentedand restored to original specification. The paint and bodywork arequite attractive overall, with just a few minor blemishes picked upfrom use on the road. Panel fit is quite good, and the detailing iscrisp and well defined. A set of proper Campagnolo alloy wheelsprovides the finishing touch. The exotic exterior styling carriesover into the cabin, a classic 1970's Italiancockpit with lots ofblack material and an exotic, driver-focused instrument cluster.The original wood-rim steering wheel is a delight to hold. Seats,door cards and interior panels are trimmed in black as peroriginal, and the red carpet sets off the cabin in a wonderful'70's way. This was a rather expensive GT car in its day, so waswell-equipped with a full array of Jaeger instrumentation, powerwindows, and excellent bolstered seating. The engine shows verywell, with tidy detailing and finishes. This jewel of a V8 featuresSPICA fuel injection that allows a screaming 7000rpm redline. A5-speed manual ZF transmission feeds power to Alfa's proven liverear axle with a limited slip differential. These are wonderfulcars to drive, and the sound at full tilt is glorious. The AlfaRomeo Montreal has enjoyed a well-deserved resurgence in valuerecently,as collectors have finally taken notice of its glamorousstyling, fantastic engine, and rarity. Butitstill remains arelative bargain when compared to its more common competitors suchas the Porsche 911 orJaguarE-Type. An exotic, high-revvingV8,outlandish Bertone styling and lots of room for luggage makesthis an idealGranTurismomachine.
