1972 Plymouth Duster 340 Tribute After a successful partnership with Warner Bros. studios to use theRoadrunner cartoon, (and sound), on the now legendary muscle car,Plymouth thought the Tasmanian Devil would be the perfectcomplement to the Duster line and had hoped to use his image on thecar. But negotiations didn't work out, so they created thecartoonish twister logo inhouse, and it has become the recognizableimage associated with the car. For consignment, a 1972 Plymouth Duster 340 tribute. Here is a carwith many performance, cosmetic, and functional upgrades orfreshening and a long list of Mopar awards, including three timesat Chryslers at Carlisle, a feature article in Mopar CollectorsGuide, a Mopar Nationals class win, 8 Mopar Atlantic Nationalswins, a Chryslers at Carlisle T-building invitational participant,3 National Chrysler Products Clubs Nationals wins including 1 BestOf Show and 1 Prestige award, 3 AACA regional show wins, and 4Mopar Heritage Society regional wins alongs with a slew of otherawards and show wins to illustrate it's excellence and reward thefine work that went into building this Duster. Let's delve into theinner workings of this A-body out of the Mopar Rapid Transit Systemthat is now racing through our Hallowed Halls. ExteriorTwo stage Electric Blue, (a 1993 Chrysler color), covers the carand is sportified by a body length white stripe on the shoulderline, terminating with the 340 decal. This miles deep paint hasbeen applied over a mix of both new and and the finest donor sheetmetal that was sourced both locally and nationally and things arelooking fine and dandy. A snorkel type functional hood scoop topsthe hood which is held in place with hood pins. The shark's toothgrille is original and not a reproduction according to theconsignor, and the marker lights creatively fill three of the teethon each side. The epic stacked slit taillights are surrounded bywhite stripes augmented by the Duster logo decal. 14-inch Moparrally wheels, (14x6 up front and 14x9 in the rear), occupy eachcorner, all looking good. InteriorThe outside meets the inside with vivid white vinyl door panelssurrounded by body colored top and bottom. The split bench seats inwhite vinyl, are in excellent condition and front passengers aresecured with 3-inch racing lap harnesses. The rear bench, whichalso includes the nickel inlay detail, looks untouched. A Grant GTsteering wheel veers from the color scheme with its wood rim andtriple spokes and shares the column with a large Autogagetachometer. The wood trimmed dash is relatively basic andsurrounded by a body color blue dash surround. Liquid filledAutoMeter Water temp and oil pressure gauges have been added andare mounted under the dash. A Blaupunkt head unit provides the tunewith AM/FM/Cassette. On the floor we find a Hurst Quarter Stickshifter surrounded by blue loop style carpet while the blueperforated headliner looks great. The trunk is lined with a graycarpet mat and is clean. DrivetrainA period correct 340ci V8 is under the pins and is equipped with11.:1 compression TRW pistons with Speed Pro rings and a MoparPerformance .484 lift cam. The Holley 750cfm 4-barrel sits on anEdlebrock Torker II intake manifold and gases escape throughJet-Hot coated Hooker headers. The 340 cylinder heads have beenrebuilt with newvalves, hardened seats and a 3 angle valve job wasperformed. An A727 Torqueflite 3-speed automatic transmission withan external cooler, deep sump pan, and B&M shift kit sendspower to the 8.75" rear with 3.23 SureGrip gears and Mark Williamsaxles, (a 489 carrier with 3.91 gears and SureGrip is included).Disc brakes with single piston calipers occupy the front while11x2.5" drums are in the rear. The engine bay of course is showquality, incredibly clean and showing lots of polished metal andour consignor notes that the drivetrain has logged 10,000 troublefree miles. Other detailed notes on the drivetrain includeinformation that this potent combo was rebuilt and installed bynoted Mopar Super Stock factory backed racer Ken Montgomery Sr. UndercarriageNot unexpectedly, the underside is spotless. The 2.5" exhaust flowsfrom the headers to meet a cross pipe and then two Flowmastermufflers before exiting in the back via chrome oval exhaust tips.Mopar Performance torsion bars are up front with Mopar PerformanceSuper Stock springs in the rear. The undercarriage is clean and dryand includes powder coated frame connectors that undoubtedly addsome stiffness. Drive-AbilityIt's not everyday you get to drive a 3-time Chrysler at Carlislewinner so naturally we babied it out of the garage and gently easedthe throttle pedal forward. Melodic sounds came from the exhaustand the engine had plenty of power. No issues with the ride, thebrakes, or the functional items. We did note, however, that thehorn didn't toot nor did the heater blower blow. Here's a wonderful showcase of a Mopar tribute done right.Fantastically clean and of course, well sorted, this is one thatwould be more than welcome to Mopar only events as well as justabout anywhere where the audience appreciates clean, well builtcars. Stem to stern, this car has been improved. It's only missinga new home.
