This 1973 El Camino features the numbers-matching Turbo-Jet LS4 454-cubic-inch V-8, with a four-barrel carburetor, 8.25:1 compression and dual exhaust, that was installed at the factory when new. The Y in the VIN denotes that this was a 454 car from the factory. the top end of the engine was rebuilt 3,000 miles ago, adding an Edelbrock aluminum intake and four-barrel carburetor, steel braided hoses, an aluminum radiator, and a new heater core. The El Caminoâs big-block 454 is mated to a floor-shifted Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 three-speed automatic that is also said to match to the engine and the VIN. Of the thousand or so SS 454 equipped El Caminos, the majority featured this transmission. The transmission shifts well.
