Featuring design cues similar to those ofthe new Type 996 911 models, especially in terms of the front endand body sides, the new 986 Boxster was launched ahead of the"senior" Porsche, with the pilot-car production starting in thesecond half of 1995 and actual production in mid-1996.Powering theBoxster was Porsche's new M96 liquid-cooled flat-six engine, themarque's first water-cooled, non-front mounted engine. Mid-mountedin the Boxster chassis, this configuration provided a low center ofgravity, near-perfect weight distribution, and neutral handling.Delivering 201 horsepower and available with a choice of a 5-speedmanual gearbox or Porsche's Tiptronic unit with manual capability,the first-generation Boxster could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph inas little as 6.9 seconds and approach 150 mph.
